The Honored Dead - Music by John Philip Sousa

A combination salute and funeral dirge, Sousa wrote this signature march for Miskatonic University in 1876. Already noted for it's extreme high mortality rate among graduates and attendees, Sousa's "Dirge March" as it was first called, quickly gained popularity with the metaphysical students on campus. When the ill fated 1930-31 Antarctic Expedition returned with only 2 survivors, the march was renamed "The Honored Dead" and played for the lost souls of the expedition. By this time, many of the original 1876 students were faculty members or wealthy alumni. In 1932 "The Honored Dead" became the official march for the university. Over the years the words have been altered, but they still retain the general theme of pride for those that "went before".

Man, lives to learn,
And so we try!
Sometimes we learn too much,
And then we die!
To those before, who opened up the door.
We will salute... The Honored Dead!
Their sacrifice was great.
And we can't wait til it's our turn.
And so we go, and boldly so.
To know what man's not meant to lear---n.
And I'm telling you,
It's no mere few.
Many are called,
many are chosen.
We seen some things that man should never see,
and filled the stacks inside the library,
with tomes and grimoires of the foulest kind.
To translate them could cost your mind.
